Optometric consultations qualify for Medicare rebates – i.e. Bulk billed to Medicare and usually there is no out of pocket expense for undergoing a general eye examination. In some cases if a digital retinal photo or more advanced equipment is needed to have a closer look into the eye there may be an extra fee.
Contact Lens examinations
At the initial eye examination (covered by Medicare), our optometrists will determine your suitability for contact lens wear and inform you of the costs (if any) involved in subsequent contact lens consultations. The cost of a contact lens exam is determined by the strength of your prescription, by the length of the examination and what’s involved during the exam (e.g. if instructions are involved on how to insert your lenses, how to look after them, to determine the best contact lens type for you, or to assess if there has been any complications from wearing the contact lenses). For certain prescriptions (e.g. some of the higher and more complicated prescriptions) the contact lens consultation fees may be covered by Medicare.
